Meet the Characters
Dayne Lancer
Dayne Lancer is one of the two points of view of the book. Introspective, cautious, and perceptive, Dayne harbors a great deal of guilt for a magical incident that happened when he was a child. As a result, he tends to be his own toughest critic.
While he typically aims for diplomacy and empathy in tough situations, he won’t hesitate to stand up for himself and those he cares about.
Kohl Dalton
Nalada Lancer
Nalada Lancer is the other point of view character and Dayne’s cousin. Ambitious, determined, and stubborn, she has a strong (albeit rigid) sense of right and wrong and is quick to challenge and criticize anything she deems unjust.
Contrary to Dayne, she tends to throw caution to the wind and often acts first and asks questions later. She can be impatient and quick to judgment but is fiercely loyal to those she cares about.
Kohl Dalton is the third member of Dayne and Nalada's triad in the Umbral Guard. Though he can come across a bit tactless and arrogant, he often feels a need to prove himself. His ambition can clash with Nalada's and cause some tension in the group.
Myrellian "Myrnie" Elapalis is extremely curious, passionate, and formerly attended one of Terideal's premier universities. Though she can be shy and unsure of herself, Myrnie is exceptionally kind-hearted and would go through hell and back for her friends, whether they're human or animals.
While she deeply values the connections in her life, she is a bit guarded about her past and will never divulge a secret even to those she cares about. She works as a light catcher, people that harvest magic for the Umbral Guard.
Liora Stefford
Quick-witted, resourceful, and determined, Liora Stefford is the general's daughter. Despite a relatively sheltered upbringing, she’s quick to take matters into her own hands when needed and can use her status and family’s connections to talk her way out of problems. While she can come across a bit arrogantly, she is actually deeply aware of the class divides in her city.
Myrnie Elapalis
Karcer
The best boy! Karcer is a Novecian Shepherd with three long fluffy tails, one black, one sable, one grey. The breed is known for their elegance, longevity and beauty. Novecian Shepherds can live to be well over 100 years. Above all, they are valued for their ability to herd wisps, the source of all aura which fuels magic in the world of Terideal.
Karcer was originally Nalada's father's dog and grew up with her and Dayne. While he frequently demands attention and can be a bit of a coward, he is fiercely loyal when push comes to shove.
